My wife has an Acer Laptop running Windows 7 64 bit and was trying to view Power Point files and kept getting the dll error. To solve the problem I uninstalled Power Point Viewer 2007, then went here Power Point Viewer 2010 download and installed the new version. Then go to Windows Update in the Control Panel and run it, there should be 3 or 4 updates for the Power Point app. Install the updates, shut down the computer so they install, restart and you should be good to go.
Changed the Game Room flash game pages.
Fixed the Puzzle pages, they still only work with IE same with the Picture puzzles.
Updated all the main site pages.
Removed 3 shock wave games, they were acting wierd.
I recently cleaned up a friends Laptop, a Dell, it would run fast all the time and shut down after 20 minutes or so. The problem was the Fan that cools the Heat Sink was totally blocked with lint/dust. I had to remove the Heat Sink which sits on top of the CPU usually there are 4 screws that you remove, then lift the Heat Sink off the CPU, I needed to do this to hers because there was no other way to blow the dust out. I blew out the fins of the heat sink with a can of compressed air which you can buy at computer stores and had to use a tweezers to remove all the built up dust, the fan was unable to spin because of all the dust. Then I used the compressed air to blow the rest out. Before you put the heat sink back in you need to clean the heat sink where it sits on the CPU and the CPU where the heat sink touches it. You then put some Thermal Grease Compound (info about it at Amazon) on the CPU and then carefully lay the heat sink down on top and screw in the 4 screws. If you do not know what I am talking about take your Laptop to a computer Shop/Tech and have them clean it out.
For regular maintenance buy a can of compressed air around $5.00, you shut your Laptop down, remove the Battery and then Unplug the AC power plug, turn the Laptop over. Next take the can of Compressed Air attach the red tube and blow into the opening where the fan is and where the fan blows the air out, if dust comes out Cool, keep doing it until no more dust comes out. Do not soak it with air do short bursts. When done let the Laptop sit a few minutes to let any liquid air on the parts evaporate. Then put the Battery back in and plug the AC plug back in and fire it up. If you do this every month or so it will extend the life of your computer.
I was going to do a “How To” but every brand of Laptop is different, you can do a search on Google for Clean Heat Sink fan “then the Brand and Model” of your laptop or even search on Youtube.
Since Jan 1 2011 the forum spammers have been out in full force. They have been hitting my forum and others with a vengeance, I added a mod to mine to stop them or hopefully slow them down. Some of these are not spambots they are actual people in Russia that are being paid to add spam to forums. WordPress uses a spam service and mine has been stopping these registrations, like over 3,000 so far. Time to get prepared for a new round of fighting off spammers folks.
Had to make a new sitemap for the Search Engines, they only accept text and XML files now. The sitemap.html is still there and has been updated. Wow this ended up being a real pain trying to figure out what links to put in the text file, there are a lot of links on this site, my hobby got a little huge from 2000 to 2010. I just went with the major static and index pages otherwise were talking hundreds of thousands of links. I know there are some XML sitemap generators out there, but they only scan for 500 links. There is some software you can buy and install on the Server but there are a lot of options you have to set up in order to use them effectively. Makes CMS software really attractive for a site, you can install SEO/Sitemap plugins that do it all for you and they are free. CMS were not available when I started my site and moving it over would be an enormous project for just a hobby.
Just a fun note: WordPress was just starting up back then and it was bad, it was getting hacked all the time, I had tried it as an experiment and got hacked right away, it was removed by my Host not long after I had installed it, lol, software has really evolved from back then. Now WordPress is the most used Blogging software on the Internet and is “very” secure and fun to play around with. Like a CMS it has many free plugins to enhance your Blog and it is not to hard to make you own theme or modify an existing free theme.
Fixed some Head tags “Keywords” apparently Google was using some of them as site links, weird.
Fixed some game pages that somehow got messed up.
Removed a lot of old posts on this Blog, mostly site updates from years ago.
If you have a Dell Laptop with Media Direct and it is typing slow, you can try this and see if it fixes the problem.
This worked on a Dell Laptop running Windows XP:
1. Click on Start -> Run.
2. Type in “msconfig”.
3. Go to Startup Tab (last Tab).
4. Uncheck “PCMService.exe”
5. Click on OK.
6. This will prompt you to restart your computer. Restart your computer.
7.When it starts back up a box will appear telling you you made changes to msconfig, you can check the box not to prompt you at start-up, click OK. See if it types faster.
These are some interesting articles about why we are running out of IP addresses. Most of the problems are because of the explosion of data that is about to happen, one of which are mobile devices. We need to implement the IPv6 Protocol that uses a 128-bit address. We are currently using the IPv4 Protocol which uses a 32-bit Address. As a Home PC user we would need a new Router that would be able to handle the IPv6 packets, which are much bigger then the IPv4 packets. Also the Internet Service Providers will also have to update their equipment, they are the companies that provide us with our IP Addresses.
This article explains what the two Protocols are and the differences on Wikipedia: IPv6
