I'm having problems again when I click on any of my favorites from the desktop. I keep getting an "IExplorer caused an invalid page fault in module kernnel 32.dll and shell32.dll. I've checked the msn data base for info on this, it had a few suggestions that I tried but it didn't fix the problem. I've even formatted & reinstalled win98 se. still having the same problems, I've disabled everything but the sys.tray & explorer, nothing helps! Sometimes I can't even close out the little box that gives me the error message, I have to manually turn the computer off. Ctrl/Alt/ delete doesn't work when the box pops up. I'm lost...

Thanks Mike,I already tried these. So I'm gonna format this thing one more time. Hopefully, "keeping my fingers crossed" it will work right after that. So wish me luck.

After you install windows do you get all the updates and update DirectX and the lastest version of IE and Outlook. Then make sure you have the updated drivers for all your hardware.

well,... thats another problem. It seems that when I use the updates from microsoft, If I lose a driver or file for any reason, the little screen comes up & says to insert your operating disk. Then, all of the drivers & files have been updated & the disk is obsolete. I have to format this thing on an average of 2-3-4 times a year. It seems Microsoft has a monopoly going here. when you download one of thier updates, it makes something else obsolete so then you have to download another one of thier so-called fixes until your computer is so screwed up,....it don't know what to do! It worked fine for awhile untill I started using thier fixes & now it's back to the drawing board.

I update all the time and mine runs like a Top, but I use Microsoft updates, Updates.com and PCpitstop.com to make sure I am checking everything. I also run Wndows File Checker regularly and Norton SystemWorks, Weekly or after I uninstall something. I also downloaded a Registry Checker ( Free ) that really does a good job, I'll send it to you. Next I run Norton Disk Doctor or Scandisk, then Defrag at least once a month. I download and save all the ZIP files of Drivers and DirectX, which I end up using a lot. This is a lot of work, but my Windows runs great.
Also I only update stuff I think I need, not everything. I also check the Device Manager for conflicts with IRQs and the Directx Utility for problems. I haven't gone to XP yet, because 98 runs smooth for me. I also Hack out old Registry Entries, the ones Norton leaves. I have to say I like doing all of this, to most it would be a pain.

Well, I'm back to the win98se standard install. Everything is working now. I had to reformat twice. I finally ended up doing standard format using the C:/U format, then I did a low level format using my bios formatting tool. I don't know if it helped but everything is back to normal again. So now I'm going to try & download the updates again, 1 by 1 in case there is something in them that my computer won't except. I'll keep you posted if anything goes wrong.

Good Luck,
I tried getting a Network card and Voodoo card in today, they kept sharing IRQ 9, which is what the Voodoo should be on. I finally Reserved IRQ 9 and they installed to 10 and 11. Jeepers creepers, I wish you could change resources for PCI like you can for ISAs, this was on an HP Computer.

Do you happen to know of a GOOD BIOS update utility?

Go to the Computer Manufactors web site and seach for a Bios Update, they will have all the instructions on how to install it. Newer Mother Boards come with software that allows you to update the bios in Windows, but they would not work with older boards. Make sure it is the bios for your computer, flashing the bios with the wrong one will make your computer inoperable and the only way to fix it would be to send it back to the company. So be carefull : )

Hi John
First make sure you have Aol 9 saved as a download or have the cd, next uninstall or remove all versions of aol from your system. Before you install Aol 9, End Task on all programs running in ctrl-alt-delete except Systray and Explorer. After removing all versions of Aol, I would run Scandisk and defrag the drive then reboot, then check to make sure Aol is removed from Add/Remove, (it has been know to reinstall itself), then End Tasks and reinstall Aol 9
