Can anyone tell me how to do this? I'm totally lost in all the jargon, I need to know if it's possible to install an external CD ROM drive to my IBM Thinkpad 380. Any advice gratefully received!!

If it has a USB port, you should be able to get a drive that connect to the USB port.
