I have IE 6.0.2800 with XP Pro, cable modem (attbi). Recently I lost the ability to load certain web sites. It started after I ran Spybot, but after the problem surfaced, I did a Spybot "recovery" which supposedly put things back the way that they were before.

The problem is not always consistent, though certain sites will never load and others will always load. Others sometimes load and sometimes don't. Further, some will partially load. I will get three or four progress bars and maybe the background color of the site, then it just quits loading any further. Email (Outlook 2002 SP2) is also affected. Sometimes the send/receive doesn't work, other times it does.

I have cleaned out the cookies, downloads, etc., and set all the IE variables to default. The problem is not in the HOSTS file; I tried emptying it and deleting it with no effect. I also tried disabling the DNS Client service but no effect. I also did a system restore to a time before the problem arose, but no effect.

I wonder if it is a firewall issue, but I don't know how to test/fix it. I have a home network with a DLink 714 router. The main computer seems to have the problem whether it is connected to the cable modem directly or through the router. A secondary computer does not have the problem if it is connected to the cable modem directly, but it does if it connected through the router. I believe there is a firewall built in to the router, but I don't know how to manipulate it for testing. XP Pro also has a firewall, but I don't know how to manipulate that either.

I have seen recent posts regarding similar problems on the Microsoft Support site (IE Browser Newsgroup), but no obvious fix. I know that that Microsoft put out a bad Update a week ago, which it subsequently withdrew, but supposedly doing a system restore will solve that problem. (I don't think I downloaded the bad update, but it is possible that I did.)

I am totally stuck. Any ideas?

Focusing a bit on the heart of the problem, I realize that what's happening is that, while most sites will load instantly, some sites are loading EXTREMELY slowly (e.g., 30 minutes or more) and usually just hanging before the download is complete. Using "View Source" I can see the HTML code dripping in, but it never finishes.

Not sure what the problem would be, you can turn off the XP firewall by going into Network connections - Advanced Tab. It could be the sites that you are visiting, do you have the java, flash plugins. I run on a cable modem and no sites take 30 min to load a min would be extremely long. The firewall in the router is Zone Alarm pro which you have to purchase to install with the router. Check to make sure you have your Router setup properly, check the manual, have been running mine for over a year with 0 problems. Make sure IE cache is cleared.
