HI Mike, Here I am again. While playing with an old laptop,I decided to try & copy the win95 zipped files from a cd-rom off of my computer to floppies, "the laptop doesn't have a cd rom".So In using the xcopy command, I was able to put all the files onto the laptop. OK, well, when I went to run setup it got all the way to 17% installing the files, then it started asking for the files from the win95_02 cab. Apparently it wouldn't unzip them. I've tried using the extract command but it can't read them either. I tried extracting them & then installing them but that doesn't work either. I read somewhere that you had to extract cab files 2 through 17 when installing from disks, but this isn't working for me. What now?

I haven't tried that yet, did save the files. I'll check around as I'm sure you have. Just thinking, could you slave the cd-rom off the Laptops IDE Cable to the harddrive ? You would have to use a different IDE cable and a pig tail power connector, I did this with a 286 that had no extra IDE on mobo, it worked only had 8megs of ram so Windows said no to the install.

Well, I thought about trying that too, but trying to find a pig tail for the laptop would be like, looking for a needle in a haystack. This is an old compaq laptop abut a 93-94 model. The orignal hard drive fried & I replaced it with a used one with 350mb. it works fine with Win3.1 but I want the win95 on it. Thats what it had before the crash. Also I tried installing the win95 over the 3.1 but it said I needed the upgrade version, so I tried the win95b. disk and got the same message.I'm going to try & format agin using the C:/U/S format and go from there.

When you run setup wouldn't it be trying to looking on the CD-rom and Floppy for all the files or did you change the command to the C:? and drive tmpdir for unzipped files. It would unzip and place all the files in the temp dir.

Well now I don't know what I did? After I formatted & reinstalled the cab files, it tells me to put in Setup disk 1. I don't know where that came from,as I copied all the files from the cd rom. The longer I mess with it,... the more confused I get! I guess It's time to take a break!

Hey Gary what about this, what if you created a small partition, D: drive which would normally be the cd-rom, installed the files to that partition, then go through the normal setup with the Startup disk, I wonder if it would treat the D: drive as if were the cd-rom drive?

Hi Mike, well thats an Idea, but I think since there isn't a CD-rom it won't detect it because there are no device drivers. I just can't understand why, WHen I type C:\setup, it doesn't recognize the setup files, It did one time but I didn't have all the files loaded or extracted, So I reformatted & xcopied all the files that are on the 95 disk. They all show up as files on C:\. Even in the config.sys, all the files are there, but it won't do anything now.???????!

When I copied all the folders,I could only put them in C:\. I did the same thing the first time & it got me into the setup program, but now it doesn't do anything. There is no operating system on it at all. I fdisked & reformatted, using a win95a boot disk, then I systemed the "C" drive so it would boot without the disk. I copied the extract & xcopy files to the boot disk & then copied them to "C" when the computer boots, the win95 logo screen shows up for about 5 sec. then it goes to the "C" promp. When I type "DIR, it shows all the files in "C" all 128 of them. When I type "setup" it just goes right back to the "C" promp.

Here is an XCOPY command,
xcopy c:\*.* /h /i /c /k /e /r /y d:
it copies the whole drive, every file, from C: to D:, if you install 95 on a harddrive C:, slave the laptops harddrive to it D:, copy to the labtops harddrive, put the harddrive back in the laptop, you would have to clean up the conflicts, or before you copy it, remove the devices in the device manager( Remove everything in the Device Manager, mouse last or you'll have to use the Keyboard ), then when it boots Windows will refind everything on the laptop. Maybe easier then what you are doing.
