hi,
i bought a 2nd hand computer from a collegue, and an expensive cable, in order to transfer files from 1 computer to the other, as a back up.
i managed to install a "direct cable connection", so my "real computer" is host and the 2nd hand one is guest, but i have no idea how to find the files of the host computer on the guest computer.
on the host computer, i shared my entire hard disk.
but after a minute or so a window pops up on the guest computer, asking to type the name of the host computer.
----> the name????? what name? my host computer is my host computer, what do they mean with "name"? I tried to rename the C: drive, to rename "my computer", to give a name to my computer in the "networks" box, but whatever i do, after i type in one of these names on the guest computer, i get the message "couldn't find the host computer, so you can't view the shared files".
(sorry if i get the terminology wrong, i have the Dutch edition of Windows)
so what can I do to see the files of the host computer on the guest computer? So I can transfer them to the guest computer?
i'd be very thankful for any advice.
bye,
erik smit

Hi Eric
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Network Icon, double click it-go to the Idendification Tab-Computer Name-type in a name-I would then reboot-then use that name to see the files.

hi,
thats funny i thought i posted a reply but it seems that i didnt...
anyway, this doesnt work unfortunately. i had already thought of calling my computer "flip" in the network identification tab, but the guest computer still gives me "can't find host computer" when i type "flip". so i still have a good serial cable connection, both computers say the connection is running, but no way to view the files of the host comp. on the guest comp....
any other ideas?
btw, as far as i have understood a serial cable is not a network, so it's funny it should be in "network properties"... the basic thing i don't understand is: if i put a cable between 2 computers there should be a way to transfer files shouldn't there? but windows seems to be quite reluctant to do this...
