Hi Mike, I got a problem with my win modem, I'm working a friends HP Pavillion, Someone tried to install Win2000 over Win95. So I formatted & installed WIN98se. OK, everything went well.ok, I installed the drivers for the win modem, that worked fine, then I connected to the internet,no problems, but when I clicked on I.Explorer, it started loading the page & Then the computer shut down & kept trying to restart by itself, I finaaly pulled the plug on it to get it to stop. OK, I fired it back up Connected again, I tried clicking on outlook exp. & it did the same thing again. So I figured it was in the config. settings, Now I can't get the modem to work at all. I took the modem out & put it back in & the computer reconiginized it. It shows up in device manager & in the modem properties but when I click the More info tab, it says no modem installed on com-1. I tried removing the cmos batt. that doesn't help it either, so I tried another modem, still nothing The interupt is IRQ3 I tried changing it to IRQ4 & still nothing. It's a PCI Win modem.

Hi Gary
Never had one shut down and keep trying to restart, wierd. I would put the card in the farthest PCI slot from the CPU, then try Drivers that Windows has, check in the Device Manager by clicking the Computer Icon then check the IRQS to see if in fact it is sharing or not. Then I set up the Network Panel-Protocols and TCP/IP. Then go to My Computer and set up the New Connection. Then I use the Connection Wizard to set up the Modem for IE and Mail. Been awhile since I used a Phone Modem, Win Modems are Software driven, Hardware driven modems are a lot easier with less problems. I had that on an Old Packard Bell and it was a B---H to remove it from the system, so I could get another modem working. Was there another Modem installed on the system and was it *Completely* removed ? I did a search in the registry and Explorer for the old Drivers and removed all traces of it, before another one would work.

Hi Mike,This modem did work, After the first install of win98, it showed up in the modems properties box, and when I clicked the more info. tab, it communicated with it. It showed that it was on com-1. Now when I go there, it shows a serial mouse on com-1 & then the modem. I don't know where the mouse came from, this computer has a PS-2 mouse port. I say after the first install because I reinstalled win98 thinking that there may have been a corrupt driver or config. after I tried getting on the net.

You probably already did this, but delete the serial mouse.

Your right, I did that. I can't understand why the interrupt for the modem is on IRQ3 in device manager and in the tools menue in sys. info. it shows that the interrupt for the modem is showing IRQ11? I can only change the IRQ from 3 to 4 in device manager. Any ideas how to change that? This thing only has one PCI slot.

Hi Gary
I would remove the Modem, and the phone Properties in My Computer, reinstall the Drivers and setup the Dailup Networking. Either that or the card got zapped by the lightning.

Hi John
I have both but rarely use Netscape, to slow, to many plugins, IE is fast and easy, IE 6 has new features. Check out my page on Reformating, has so links and a printer friendly page. It is a link to a program I used to trouble shoot modem problems when I was on a phone connection. The phone Properties Utility, Dialup Network Utility, at Run type in= winipcfg for configuration, you can ping your connection, use IE's Internet connection Wizard to set it up and the Device Manager. IE has a Repaire Utility in System Information under Tools.

Hi John
No problem, enjoy helping ( :
Sounds like a settings problem, did you use the Internet Connection Wizard to connect, try Deleting that setup in Phone Connection and set it up again, make sure all the settings are correct.

Junk Mail, not a lot you can do, I use Outlook Express, in that you can click on the Email, go to Message-Block Sender, it will automatically trash anymore emails from that sender.
To stop popup ads, if you have a firewall program it may allow you to block popups, if not this is one program that is free and will block them,
