Hi Mike,
I have McAfee virus scan 6.0 and firewall. The firewall program says I can uninstall using the Windows add and remove program but I can find nothing about uninstalling the virus scan. Can I remove all of the virus scan 6.0 with the add and remove program in Windows. I want to install Norton's System Works 2002 and Norton's firewall.

Hi Maggie
You should beable to unistall using the Add/Remove, make sure the programs are completely turned off and not running, before you uninstall. If not listed in the Add/Remove check in Programs-McAfee for the Uninstall link. I would recommend buying Norton SystemWorks it comes with Norton AntiVirus and other good features like Clean Sweep, you could actually turn off McAfee install Norton SystemWorks and use CleanSweep to uninstall McAfee. If you do not need the Manual you can get Anti Virus for $35.00 or System Works for $33.00 here http://www.viosoftware.com/symantecstore.html
Email me if you have more questions ( : Mike

Thanks Mike,
I am going to give it a try and see what happens. I have nothing to lose as my computer is getting slower and slower. I went to PC pit stop and they said I have unusually low disk performance.
Drive C has a cached speed of 40.28 megabytes per sec. After you informed me how to upgrade my ram to 255 in March I have not had any problems till now. Hope Norton system works can find my problem, if not I will be back. I have already purchased Norton's are I would take you up on your offer. I am a newbie but you give me courage.

Have you Defragmented your drive yet, that may be why it is running slow.

HI Mike,
Yes, I defrag, scan disk and am running explorer, systray,McAfee firewall and virus scan only in start up. I have deleted all unnecessary files. I have 94% resources till I sign on AOL then it drops to 74% after I am on a while it keeps dropping till I lose my connection. Today I lost my shockwave capabilities. The message I get is
"network error, check your internet connection."
When I go to AOL they said it was a shockwave problem. I am just going nuts. Everything was working fine and now everything is acting up. It stormed here yesterday so I didn't get to install Norton Sytemworks but hope to get that done today.
Wish me luck.

Try this, before you sign on to Aol, go to ctrl-alt-delete and End Task on everything, except Explorer and Systray, then open Aol, if this helps, something, a program that is running in the background is creating the problem. Let me know what happens !!

Hi Mike,
I finally got Norton installed and there is an improvement in the computer resources. I am getting a message when I go to the recycle bin that is Norton protected. It says "restarting due to disk write..." do you want to keep trying. I say yes and so far it has gone ahead and worked. Is this something that you can tell me about? I have tried the deleting of everything with ctrl-alt-delete except for the Explorer and Systray and still have a loss when I go on AOL. Now after using Norton I go from 92% resources to 72% when I go on AOL but it works pretty good however I did get disconnected twice today for no reason. I don't have call waiting on this phone line and it is designated for Web use only as I have a private line for personal calls.
I will keep looking maybe I can find something else. I am going back to PC Pit stop and have another check tonight.

Hi Maggie
Here are some things I do to speed up the computer.
I don't run the Virus protection in the background, only the Email scan. I run a full system scan once a month, if you have the virus protection on all the time it will slow down the computer a lot.
Next I actually turn off everything except email scan in Norton SystemWorks, I do one button scans once a week. I would also download Startup Cop and use that to Disable other programs that are running in the background, you can go to Start-Run and type in msconfig and go to the Startup Tab ( Startup Cop does this only it is easier to use ) the only thing that needs to be checked is System Tray and Explorer if listed. I also leave my email Virus Scan program checked ( NavAgent )and the Script Blocking checked. None of the other stuff needs to run unless you want it in the Task Bar. To shut off stuff in Norton go to the Options Button on the main screen. All those programs that run in the background use up system resourses.
Update Norton right away over and over again until it tells you you have all the updates, then run the one button scan on the first screen, also do a full system virus scan and go to Clean Sweep and do a Fast and Safe cleanup.

Hi Mike,
I have printed out the above instuctions and will do this. Sounds good as I have been using selective startup ever since I installed more ram. I went to Pac's Portal and deleted everything like you said. After installing Norton's they have added a lot of additional stuff. I really didn't know what I could delete and still have protection. Thanks for the info. Your site has been a blessing for me. Thanks for the great help.
