Bad Ram:
I recently purchased some generic ram at a local store, it was a stick of 128 megs for 10.00. I first put it in my sons HP, after I installed it, the computer started acting up. When you clicked to open the Start Menu it would pop up and then close right away, in Explorer when you would click on the + to open a tree it would open, then close right away, Games would shut down to the Desktop while playing, etc. I bought a stick of Micron 128 megs and removed the generic and replaced it with the Micron, all the above symptoms dissappeared. I had a stick of the same ram in my computer and it worked fine, so I added the one from my sons, to mine. Ran fine at first, but I ran a couple games and they were very slow, then I tried playing a couple mp3s and they were choppy. I removed the ram and everything was fine again. So whats my point !! The Ram was accepted by the Bios and Windows but was still bad, if you are getting these kind of symptoms from your Computer, you may have a stick of bad ram and it is wiser to buy a name brand then the cheaper generic.

I had a stick of bad RAM (256 DDR) and couldn't load Windows XP. It would get page fault errors and would't copy many files. It acted like the CD was bas not the memory. It will cause many problems that can be varied from one moment to the next so if you are experiencing erratic behavior, suspect the RAM.
