Hi Ron

Check in the Add/Remove Utility to make sure you do not have an earlier Version of DirectX installed if there is, uninstall it.
Next there is a new verson of DirectX 8.0 out 8.0a here is a link to the download http://mikescomputerinfo.com/trouble.htm
install the new version it may fix the problem.
You can not uninstall DirectX 8 the only way to remove it is to reformat and reinstall everything.
If this fixes the problem but the Diagnostic Screen does not load just reinstall DirectX and that usually fixes it. Also you may wont to go to Windows Update and make sure you have all the lastest updates ( bug fixes ) install, another good place is updates.com.
Also get all the lastest updates or patches for your other software, they are developed to help the software be compatible with the lastest Microsoft updates.
Hope this helps ( :
Mike
